The WUE schools list for 2026-27 includes 96 four-year colleges (and about 70 community colleges) across 15 Western states plus Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands, according to WICHE's official list. At every one, eligible students from other WUE states pay no more than 150% of the school's in-state tuition -- often thousands less than the regular out-of-state rate. Each school sets its own eligibility rules, so the list tells you where to look, not whether you'll qualify.

For how WUE compares with the Midwest, Southern and New England programs, see tuition exchange programs explained.

Published WUE rates vs. regular out-of-state tuition (2026-27)

Most schools don't publish a single WUE price, but these do. Figures are each school's own 2026-27 tuition and fees.

SchoolWUE rateRegular out-of-stateSavings
University of Idaho$13,538$29,300$15,762
University of Montana$13,774$34,894$21,120

Colorado State University$21,634$37,589$15,955

Montana's WUE rate assumes 15 credits a semester, which Montana requires to keep the award.

Big Western universities that aren't WUE schools

WUE membership is up to each school, and several of the West's best-known universities don't participate: UC Berkeley, UCLA and every UC campus except UC Merced; the University of Washington; CU Boulder; the University of Oregon; and Arizona State. In those states, look at the schools that are on the list -- Western Washington, Colorado State, Oregon State and the University of Arizona all participate.

How to get the WUE rate

  1. Check each school's WUE page or WICHE's WUE Savings Finder for its requirements -- GPA minimums, eligible majors and deadlines differ.
  2. Apply by the school's priority date. The University of Montana automatically considers applicants who apply by December 1, 2026; after that, awards depend on space.
  3. Confirm the rate on your financial aid offer, and ask what you need to do to keep it -- many schools require full-time enrollment and a minimum GPA.
