The University of Utah was founded on February 28, 1850, as the University of Deseret, making it the first state university established west of the Missouri River. Utah's flagship institution, it is organized into 17 colleges and schools and holds Tier 1 research status as a member of the Association of American Universities. It is also home to the state's only academic medical center.
