University of Utah runs a single GPA-only chart -- no separate resident and non-resident tables, no test score -- but one category of applicant is excluded from it entirely, and it's not the category you'd expect.
See all 17 real automatic scholarship charts covered this cycle for how this compares to other public universities' own tables.
The chart
| Scholarship | Unweighted GPA | Annual Award |
|---|---|---|
| Great Salt Lake | 3.50 | $3,000 |
| Red Rock | 3.70 | $4,000 |
| Bonneville | 3.80 | $6,000 |
| Provost's | 3.90 | $8,000 |
| President John R. Park | 4.00 | $10,000 |
The same table applies to Utah residents and to non-residents from states outside the Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE).
The part that surprises people: WUE eligibility shuts you out, it doesn't stack with it
Students from WUE-eligible states -- a group of mostly Western states that get a discounted non-resident tuition rate at participating schools -- might expect that discount to sit on top of a merit scholarship if their GPA also qualifies. At Utah, it doesn't. WUE-eligible students receive only the WUE tuition rate; they're not eligible for the GPA chart above at all. A non-resident student from a non-WUE state with the same GPA can claim up to $10,000/year in direct scholarship money that a WUE-eligible student, despite already getting a tuition break, cannot access on top of it.
What this means for you
- Check whether your home state is WUE-eligible before assuming this chart applies to you. If it is, you're comparing the WUE tuition rate against this scholarship table, not adding them together.
- This scale skips a full 0.1 GPA point between the bottom two tiers. Every other tier is spaced 0.1 GPA apart, but Great Salt Lake (3.50) to Red Rock (3.70) is a 0.2 jump -- there's no tier for a 3.60 GPA specifically.
- A test score isn't required, but the school still needs one from certain applicants. Homeschooled, GED/HiSET, and unaccredited-high-school students must submit an ACT or SAT score for eligibility even though the standard chart is GPA-only.
