Utah State's Fall 2027 High School GPA Scholarships pay Utah residents $1,500 to $5,000 a year for four years, from a 3.5 unweighted GPA. Non-residents face a choice instead: the discounted WUE tuition rate for four years (with $3,500 a year added at WUE+), or a one-year award of up to $16,500 for students planning to become Utah residents.

Utah State University reviews every new first-year student automatically. For how charts like this work in general, see what an automatic scholarship chart is.

Residents with a 3.0+ GPA can also get a two-year Advanced Coursework Scholarship for AP, IB, concurrent enrollment, honors or tech ed classes. It stacks on top of the GPA award.

The WUE rate is 150% of resident tuition, for students from Western Undergraduate Exchange states. Graduates of high schools within 100 miles of the Logan campus (southeastern Idaho and western Wyoming) can also get the WUE rate, or a one-year $11,500 award at Logan, with a 2.0-2.99 GPA.

The part that surprises people: the biggest number lasts one year

The $16,500 Scholar award looks like the best deal on the non-resident chart, but it pays for one year only. USU offers it to students who plan to establish Utah residency and then pay resident tuition. It must be requested before fall semester begins, and once the semester starts you can't switch between it and WUE+.

USU's own comparison, using 2026-27 tuition estimates: four years of WUE+ comes to about $34,552 in tuition, against $102,868 at the full non-resident rate. Students using WUE can't establish Utah residency for tuition purposes, so the choice is real.

The top awards use an index

Presidential and Deans awards are Premier Academic Scholarships, based on an index of GPA and composite ACT (or SAT). USU publishes the index as an image rather than a table, so the scholarship finder shows only the GPA awards. A strong test score could qualify you for more than the GPA tier.

Deadlines

  • December 1, 2026: Premier (index) awards for everyone, with test scores. Also the GPA-award deadline for residents at Logan and Statewide campuses.
  • August 1, 2027: GPA-award deadline for non-residents.
  • Accept by confirming enrollment, typically by May 1. If your GPA or scores rise before the deadline, USU reconsiders you automatically.

What this means for you

  • Utah residents: send a test score by December 1 if it might qualify you for a Premier award. The GPA chart tops out at $5,000.
  • WUE-state students: compare four years of WUE+ against one year of Scholar. The answer depends on whether you plan to become a Utah resident.
  • Students from other states: plan for the one-year award. WUE is only for WUE states.
  • Compare it with the University of Utah, where WUE students can't get the merit chart at all, and Nevada, Reno, where WUE students can stack merit money.
