How to get into Texas A&M engineering comes down to one fact most applicants miss: at Texas A&M's College Station campus, freshmen aren't admitted to a major. They're admitted to General Engineering, and they earn a major (mechanical, aerospace, computer science, and so on) through Entry to a Major (ETAM) after at least two semesters. Get a 3.75 GPA and you're placed in your first choice automatically. Otherwise, a holistic review places you based on your grades, your ETAM application, and how much room each major has.
There are six official routes into a Texas A&M engineering major for fall 2027. Here's how they fit together.
Step 1: Get admitted to Texas A&M as an engineering applicant
For fall 2027, the College Station application opens August 1, 2026 and closes December 1, 2026, through ApplyTexas or the Common App. Galveston's fall deadline is May 1, 2027, and McAllen's is March 1, 2027.
- Top 10% Texas students are automatically admitted to Texas A&M -- but the catalog is explicit: "Choice of major is not guaranteed." For more on the rule, see Texas guaranteed admission.
- Everyone else goes through holistic review.
- Because engineering enrollment is limited, Texas A&M encourages engineering applicants to choose a second-choice major. A competitive applicant who can't be placed in engineering is offered their second choice instead.
- Per the catalog, Texas A&M may instead offer some applicants a seat in Texas A&M Engineering at Blinn, Engineering at Galveston, or Engineering at McAllen -- see the other routes below.
- Testing: fall 2027 applicants aren't affected by the proposed SAT/ACT requirement. Texas A&M intends to require scores starting with spring/fall 2028 applicants, pending Board of Regents approval.
Step 2: Earn a major through Entry to a Major (ETAM)
ETAM is where the real competition happens. To be eligible (per the Class of 2030 rules, the most recent published):
- at least two semesters at Texas A&M;
- a Texas A&M cumulative and term GPA of at least 2.0;
- six required courses with a C or better: two engineering (ENGR 102 and ENGR/PHYS 216), two math, and two science.
You rank at least three majors (up to five), and you get three chances to apply, from your second semester through your fourth.
Automatic entry to your first choice requires a 3.75+ cumulative GPA or National Merit semifinalist/finalist status, plus full-time enrollment every long semester, no honor code violations, and no incomplete grades. Everyone else is placed by holistic review. The full rules, including traps like AP credit, are in Texas A&M ETAM explained.
How likely you are to get your first-choice major
In the Spring 2026 ETAM cycle, per Texas A&M's College of Engineering:
| Outcome | Share of 3,130 eligible applicants |
|---|---|
| Offered some engineering major | 100% |
| Placed in first-choice major | 72.9% |
| Placed in first- or second-choice major | 86.3% |
Of the 2,282 students who got their first choice, 928 got it through automatic entry. The hardest majors to land as a first choice were mechanical (55.9%), aerospace (61.6%), and electrical (63.2%). See Texas A&M ETAM placement rates by major for all 16.
The other paths into a Texas A&M engineering major
| Path | How you get in | How you get a major |
|---|---|---|
| General Engineering, College Station | Freshman application by Dec 1 | ETAM |
| Texas A&M Engineering at Blinn | Offered from the freshman pool | ETAM (2.5 Blinn GPA minimum) |
| Engineering Academies | Partner college + Academy application by June 1 | ETAM (2.5 partner GPA minimum) |
| General Engineering at Galveston or McAllen | Freshman application | ETAM, then move to the major's campus |
| Galveston direct admission | Galveston application by May 1 | Start in the major |
| Transfer | Transfer application, 24+ hours | Admitted directly to the major |
- Engineering at Blinn and the Engineering Academies are co-enrollment programs: you're a Texas A&M engineering student from day one but take math and science at a community college. They have their own ETAM rules -- see Engineering at Blinn vs. the Engineering Academies. Note that Blinn TEAM is a different program, and Blinn itself says it isn't a good fit for engineering.
- Galveston is the only place a freshman can start directly in an engineering major -- but only three of them. See Texas A&M Galveston and McAllen engineering.
- Transfer skips ETAM entirely, but the bar is high: most engineering majors set a 3.5 minimum GPA, and aerospace and biomedical set 3.75. See Texas A&M engineering transfer GPA requirements.
What happens if you don't get a major
General Engineering has a hard stop. If you're not in a major by the end of your fourth semester, you're dismissed from the General Engineering program and have to change into an engineering major or a major outside the College of Engineering. Departments consider ETAM-ineligible students only after placing eligible ones.
What this means for you
- Plan for ETAM, not just admission. Your first two semesters of math, physics, chemistry, and engineering decide your major.
- Aim for 3.75. It's the only way to guarantee your first choice -- unless you're a National Merit semifinalist (see the Texas National Merit cutoff).
- Rank majors strategically. Mechanical, aerospace, and electrical are the hardest first choices to land.
- Also applying to UT Austin? UT admits engineering freshmen straight into a major instead -- see UT Austin vs. Texas A&M engineering admission.
- Pick a real second choice on your application, and a real backup in ETAM.
- Know the costs. Texas families under $100,000 in income and assets may qualify for Aggie Assurance, which also covers Blinn engineering students.
- Wondering if your high school sends a lot of students to A&M? Check Texas A&M's top feeder high schools, and read why engineering admissions are more competitive than you think.
