Texas A&M engineering transfer GPA requirements are set major by major. Unlike freshmen, who start in General Engineering and compete for a major through Entry to a Major (ETAM), transfer students are admitted directly to a degree-granting major at Texas A&M. The trade-off is a high bar: for 2026-27, most engineering majors require at least a 3.5 GPA, and aerospace, biomedical, and interdisciplinary engineering require 3.75.

Minimum transfer GPA by engineering major, 2026-27
From Texas A&M's 2026-27 Transfer Course Sheets (which cover applications for the 2027 terms). Every major requires at least 24 transferable hours, except biomedical engineering, which requires 25.
| Major | Minimum GPA | Considers second-choice applicants? |
|---|---|---|
| Aerospace Engineering | 3.75 | No |
| Biomedical Engineering | 3.75 | No |
| Interdisciplinary Engineering | 3.75 | No |
| Mechanical Engineering | 3.5 | No |
| Electrical Engineering | 3.5 | No |
| Computer Engineering | 3.5 | No |
| Computer Science (BS) | 3.5 | Yes |
| Chemical Engineering | 3.5 | No |
| Civil Engineering | 3.5 | No |
| Environmental Engineering | 3.5 | Yes |
| Industrial Engineering | 3.5 (plus 3.5 in all math) | No |
| Architectural Engineering | 3.5 | No |
| Petroleum Engineering | about 3.25 | No |
| Computer Science (BA) | 3.25 | Yes |
| Materials Science & Engineering | 3.0 | Yes |
| Nuclear Engineering | 3.0 in math, physics, and chemistry | Yes |
| Ocean Engineering (College Station) | 3.0 | Yes |
| Electronic Systems Engineering Technology | 3.0 | Yes |
| Multidisciplinary Engineering Technology | 3.0 | Yes |
| Manufacturing & Mechanical Engineering Technology | 2.5 | Yes |
| Industrial Distribution | 2.5 | Yes |
A minimum isn't a target. Every course sheet says admission preference goes to applicants with the highest GPA and the most appropriate courses completed, and that meeting the minimum doesn't guarantee admission.
Course and grade requirements
- B or better in the required courses for aerospace, mechanical, electrical, and industrial engineering. Biomedical requires a C or better in each course but a 3.75 GPA across the listed courses and cumulatively.
- Calculus-level math. College Algebra, Trigonometry, and Pre-Calculus transfer, but don't count toward engineering math requirements. You may need Pre-Calculus (MATH 2412) before Calculus I (MATH 2413).
- Have the coursework done by the deadline. Competitive applicants finish required courses before applying; spring grades may be requested for fall applicants.
- Credit by exam doesn't count toward the 24-hour minimum.
- Biomedical takes three years after transfer regardless of hours completed, per its course sheet.
Transfer deadlines for fall 2027
| Campus | Application opens | Fall deadline |
|---|---|---|
| College Station | January 1 | March 1 |
| McAllen | January 1 | March 1 |
| Galveston | January 1 | July 1 |
Texas A&M also offers automatic transfer admission under SB 175 to Texas students who graduated in the top 10% of their high school class and meet the other conditions -- but the catalog says choice of major isn't guaranteed and encourages engineering applicants to pick a second-choice major.
Transfer vs. co-enrollment
If you're planning community college first, compare this against Texas A&M's co-enrollment programs. Engineering at Blinn and the Engineering Academies make you a Texas A&M engineering student from day one with a 2.5 partner-college GPA ETAM floor -- far below the 3.5 most majors require of regular transfers. The catch: you compete in ETAM, where first-choice placement in mechanical, aerospace, and electrical is the hardest.
What this means for you
- Treat 3.5 as the floor, not the goal, for most engineering majors -- and 3.75 for aerospace and biomedical.
- Take calculus-based math and physics at your current college; college algebra won't count.
- Earn Bs or better in every required course.
- Check whether your major takes second-choice applicants before you rely on a backup.
