Texas A&M Galveston engineering is the one way a freshman can start directly in a Texas A&M engineering major. At College Station, every engineering freshman starts in General Engineering and competes for a major through Entry to a Major (ETAM). At Galveston, you can apply straight into Computer Science, Ocean Engineering, or Interdisciplinary Engineering (Engineering for Marine Environment track) -- and the fall deadline is May 1, five months after College Station's.

Galveston and McAllen also host General Engineering students who go through ETAM. Here's how both campuses work. For every route into Texas A&M engineering, see how to get into Texas A&M engineering.

Two ways to start engineering at Galveston

Per Texas A&M's College of Engineering:

The Galveston majors are narrow. If you want mechanical, aerospace, electrical, or chemical engineering, direct Galveston admission won't get you there -- you'd need General Engineering and ETAM.

Going from Galveston to College Station through ETAM

General Engineering students at Galveston follow the same first-year engineering curriculum and the same ETAM rules as College Station students: at least two semesters, a 2.0 Texas A&M GPA, six required courses with a C or better, and automatic first-choice entry at a 3.75 GPA or National Merit semifinalist/finalist status. When you apply, you can choose a Galveston major to stay on the coast or apply to majors at College Station or McAllen. Texas A&M is explicit: "Once placed in a major through ETAM, students move to the location where that major is offered."

Few ETAM applicants pick the Galveston majors first. In Spring 2026, 3 eligible students ranked Galveston computer science first, and none ranked Galveston ocean engineering or interdisciplinary engineering first, per Texas A&M's ETAM summary. Full ETAM rules are in Texas A&M ETAM explained.

Texas A&M Engineering at McAllen

McAllen is a Texas A&M engineering learning center at the Higher Education Center at McAllen in the Rio Grande Valley. It offers two full degrees:

  • BS in interdisciplinary engineering, focused on hardware and control systems;
  • BS in multidisciplinary engineering technology.

To start there, Texas A&M Engineering says to submit the College Station freshman application, list McAllen as your preferred campus, and choose interdisciplinary engineering or multidisciplinary engineering technology as your first-choice major. Admitted students follow a General Engineering curriculum for the first year to year and a half, then enter a major through ETAM. You can stay in McAllen for one of its two degrees or move to Galveston or College Station for another major.

What this means for you

  • Want ocean engineering or a coastal CS degree? Galveston direct admission skips ETAM entirely.
  • Want mechanical, aerospace, or electrical? Galveston or McAllen General Engineering still leads to ETAM -- the same competition as College Station. See Texas A&M ETAM placement rates by major.
  • Missed December 1? Galveston's May 1 deadline is still open into spring.
  • Interested in maritime careers? Texas A&M Maritime Academy is also at Galveston -- see U.S. maritime academies compared.
