How it works
Each fall, Idaho high school seniors automatically receive a letter showing which of the state's 8 public colleges have pre-admitted them, based on unweighted GPA and ISAT scores already on record -- no application required to receive the notification itself. Idaho pioneered this proactive model years before several other states adopted similar direct-admission programs.
The three GPA tiers

The 8 participating institutions are University of Idaho, Boise State University, Idaho State University, Lewis-Clark State College, North Idaho College, College of Western Idaho, College of Southern Idaho, and College of Eastern Idaho.
The part that surprises people: a strong test score erases the GPA gap entirely
Regardless of which GPA tier a student falls into -- including well below 2.25 -- scoring ISAT level 3 or higher in both Math and ELA/Literacy pre-admits that student to all 8 colleges, the same result as a 3.0+ GPA. This isn't a partial boost or a move up one tier; it's a complete override. A student with a 2.0 GPA and strong ISAT scores gets pre-admitted to exactly as many schools as a student with a 3.9 GPA, something that doesn't happen in most other states' guaranteed-admission programs, where a weak GPA typically can't be fully offset by any single test result.
The catch: pre-admission isn't the same as enrollment
Getting the fall letter doesn't finish the process. Students still have to complete an Apply Idaho application to actually activate and use any of the offers listed -- the pre-admission is real and automatic, but it's a starting point, not the final step.
What this means for you
- If your GPA sits below 3.0, check your ISAT Math and ELA/Literacy scores before assuming your college list is limited. A level-3-or-higher result in both erases the GPA gap completely.
- Don't skip the Apply Idaho step because you already received a pre-admission letter. The letter alone doesn't enroll you anywhere -- you still need to complete the application to activate an offer.
- The tiers are based on unweighted GPA specifically. If your school reports a weighted GPA by default, confirm which number Idaho is actually using for your tier.
