What separated UC Irvine accepted vs. rejected applicants this cycle? In this sample, "rejected" mostly meant "waitlisted." UC Irvine admitted 21.8% of California high school applicants for fall 2025, and like every UC campus it's test-blind. Among the strong applicants who post results, very few were turned down outright; the waitlist did most of the sorting, and grades and research separated the groups.

We compared 88 UC Irvine applicants from self-reported 2026 r/collegeresults posts: 60 admitted, 8 rejected and 20 waitlisted. (Three admits came off the waitlist.) All applied in the UC's single filing period. This is part of a larger comparison of accepted vs. rejected applicants at top colleges, which explains how the data was collected. (UC Irvine's official rate is above the 15% cutoff used for that article's pooled numbers, so its decisions aren't in the pooled figures there.)

People who post results skew strong, so 68% of this sample got in, about three times UC Irvine's real rate. The non-admit group is also small (28 people), so treat every gap below as a hint, not a rule.

The waitlist was the usual "no"

Only 8 of the 88 applicants were rejected outright. Another 23 were waitlisted at some point, and 3 of those were later admitted. For a strong applicant, then, the realistic bad outcome at UC Irvine in this sample was the waitlist, not a rejection. That's different from UCLA and UC Berkeley, where most non-admits were rejected.

If you land on a UC waitlist, you have to opt in to it, and campuses don't promise any offers. Our waitlist strategy guide covers what to do next.

UC Irvine admitted student GPA: 3.975 vs. 3.81

AdmittedRejected or waitlisted
Median unweighted GPA3.975 (50 stated)3.81 (25 stated)
Median weighted GPA4.59 (38 stated)4.37 (21 stated)
Median AP/IB courses1110
Median activities listed108
National-level award65%57%

The GPA gap, about 0.17, is the widest of the UC campuses we've written up. 19 of the 50 admits who stated a GPA had a 4.0, versus 4 of 25 among everyone else. Admits also listed a couple more activities. With no test scores in play, the transcript carries more weight, just as at UC San Diego, where the gap was 3.98 versus 3.86.

Posters list their own GPAs, not UC's. By UC's weighted, capped calculation, UC Irvine's admitted public high school students averaged 4.18 for fall 2025; see UC admitted GPA by high school.

Which activities UC Irvine admits listed more often

  • Research: 60% of admits versus 36% of everyone else, the biggest activity gap at UC Irvine.
  • Clubs and honor societies: 55% versus 32%.
  • A selective summer program: 30% versus 11%.
  • Founding a club or organization: 38% versus 25%.
  • Science or general academic competitions: 33% versus 21%.
  • Coding or tech projects: 23% versus 11%.

And some showed up more often among applicants who weren't admitted:

  • Religious or cultural groups: 15% of admits versus 25%.
  • Tutoring or teaching: 45% versus 54%.
  • Community service: 53% versus 61%.
  • Student government: 17% versus 25%.

Selective summer programs came out ahead again, which makes them the one activity that lined up with admission at all four UC campuses we've written up. The clubs result is the opposite of what we saw at UNC Chapel Hill and Cornell, where honor societies showed up more among non-admits. With only 28 non-admits, a few people can swing these numbers, so read the overall shape rather than any single line.

Major choice and residency

Computer science and engineering applicants did well here: 17 of 22 CS applicants and 16 of 21 engineering applicants were admitted, by the majors posters listed. That's unlike UIUC or Cornell, where those were the hardest pools. UC campuses do admit by major, so check your own program; see the UC major-specific acceptance rate penalty.

28 of 47 California residents were admitted (60%), versus 27 of 36 out-of-state and international applicants (75%). As at UC San Diego, non-residents in this sample did at least as well as Californians. Out-of-state students entering in 2026-27 pay $56,161 a year in UC Irvine tuition and fees, versus $16,891 for residents; see UC out-of-state tuition by campus.

What UC Irvine applicants can take from this

  • Expect the waitlist, not a rejection, as the likely "no." Opt in if you're placed on it and still want to attend.
  • Grades carry the most weight. Admits were ahead by about 0.17 on unweighted GPA, and nothing offsets that with no test scores.
  • Research and selective programs stood out. Both lined up with admission here.
  • The application is different from the Common App. How UC admissions actually works covers the Personal Insight Questions and timing.
