The Illinois MAP Grant deadline isn't a date on a calendar. The Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC) pays MAP awards until the money is committed, then announces a suspense date: FAFSAs received after it go on a waiting list. That date has moved earlier in each of the last three years, from August 21, 2024 to April 23, 2026. For 2027-28, MAP pays up to $8,064, and the FAFSA is open now.
All figures are from ISAC's MAP program page and its messages to college financial aid offices.
The suspense date, year by year
| Academic year | MAP suspense date | Applies to FAFSAs received |
|---|---|---|
| 2024-25 | August 21, 2024 | On or after Aug. 21, 2024 |
| 2025-26 | June 5, 2025 | After June 5, 2025 |
| 2026-27 | April 23, 2026 | After April 23, 2026 |
| 2027-28 | Not yet announced | -- |

ISAC gave the same reason each time: the suspension is needed "to avoid overcommitting the program's available funding." The 2026-27 cutoff came about six weeks earlier than the 2025-26 one, and about four months earlier than 2024-25's.
What "suspense" means: MAP-eligible students who file after the date are put on a waiting list. If ISAC finds more money, it releases awards in the order applications were received. ISAC doesn't tell students they're in suspense; your college's award letter is your only notice.

ISAC built the 2027-28 formula before the state budget process started, assuming MAP gets the same amount as this year. Award amounts can change once the budget passes.
Who gets MAP
- Illinois residents (for dependent students, the parent on the FAFSA must be one) with financial need.
- Enrolled at an approved Illinois college in a degree or certificate program, at least 3 credit hours a term.
- No bachelor's degree yet, and fewer than 135 MAP paid credit hours used.
Grades and test scores don't count. Your college calculates your award from your FAFSA, its tuition and fees, and your other aid. MAP pays tuition and mandatory fees only, for fall and spring. You need 15 credit hours a term for your full amount; at 12 hours you'd get 12/15 of it.
What this means for you
- File the 2027-28 FAFSA now. The last cutoff came in April; nothing guarantees it won't come earlier.
- List every Illinois college you're considering on the FAFSA. MAP is calculated by the college you attend.
- Missed the date? File anyway. The suspense date doesn't affect Pell Grants, other state programs or college aid.
- Returning MAP recipients get priority access to funds if they file by ISAC's priority date (March 1 for 2026-27).
- Free-tuition programs at UIUC, UIC, NIU and others count MAP first and cover the rest. See Illinois free tuition programs.
