The formula

Regent Admission Index = (3 × ACT composite) + (30 × cumulative GPA) + (5 × years of RAI-approved core courses completed)

ACT composite tops out at 36 (SAT scores are converted to an ACT-equivalent for this calculation). GPA tops out at 4.00, on a scale that can be weighted or unweighted. Core courses are counted in years or fractions of a year across English, math, science, social studies, and world language. A total score of 245 or higher qualifies a student for automatic admission to Iowa State University, the University of Northern Iowa, and the University of Iowa's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences specifically.

The part that surprises people: GPA outweighs ACT by a factor of ten

Run the multipliers against each component's real range. GPA is multiplied by 30 across a 4.0-point scale -- so one full GPA point is worth 30 RAI points. ACT is multiplied by 3 across a roughly 35-point range -- so one ACT point is worth just 3 RAI points. That means a single full point of GPA carries the exact same weight in this formula as ten full points on the ACT. A student weighing whether to spend senior-year effort on test prep or on protecting their GPA is looking at a formula that rewards the GPA effort ten times more per unit of improvement.

The second catch: at the University of Iowa, the guarantee is scoped to one college

The RAI guarantee at the University of Iowa applies specifically to its College of Liberal Arts and Sciences -- not the university broadly. A student aiming for a different college within the university, such as Business or Engineering, shouldn't assume a qualifying RAI score of 245 carries the same automatic guarantee there.

What this means for you

  • If your GPA and ACT are both a little short of where you'd like, focus improvement effort on GPA first. The formula's own math makes it the far more efficient lever.
  • Core course years matter too, though less than GPA. Each additional year of an approved core course adds 5 RAI points -- worth doing the arithmetic on your own transcript before assuming you're short.
  • A student below 245 isn't automatically rejected. Iowa's own rules note that applicants below the threshold, or missing a component of the calculation, are still reviewed individually rather than denied outright.
  • If University of Iowa is your target and you're not applying to Liberal Arts and Sciences, don't assume RAI 245 guarantees you in. Confirm your specific college's own policy.
