UT Austin's top feeder high schools for fall 2024 were Westlake High School in Eanes ISD (69 freshmen), Allen High School (66), and Westwood High School in Round Rock ISD (65), per the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board's (THECB) report on where each Texas high school's 2024 graduates enrolled. Even at the very top, UT drew only a slice of each class: at Westlake and Westwood, 10% of graduates enrolled -- the highest share of any Texas high school with at least 200 graduates.

How this data works

THECB matches each Texas public high school's 2024 graduates to fall 2024 enrollment at Texas public colleges and universities. Two limits matter:

  • It counts enrollment, not admission. These are students who enrolled at UT Austin, not everyone admitted.
  • Small counts are hidden. A college appears for a high school only if at least five graduates enrolled there; smaller numbers are combined into "other." The report also covers only high schools with more than 25 graduates. So the 4,950 UT Austin freshmen counted here are a floor, not UT's full freshman class from Texas.

What stands out

  • Proximity shows. Eight of the top 25 are in Travis or Williamson counties, around Austin itself, and Westlake and Westwood lead on share of graduates.
  • The biggest classes don't always send the most. Allen High School graduated 1,753 students -- one of the largest classes in Texas -- and sent 66 to UT, 3.8% of the class.
  • A Rio Grande Valley school is in the top 10. Brownsville's Veterans Memorial Early College High School sent 44 graduates (8.4%) -- more than many large suburban schools. Texas's automatic admission is based on rank within each student's own high school, not a statewide comparison; see how Texas automatic admission works.
  • UT enrollment is concentrated. 366 of 1,629 high schools had at least five graduates enroll at UT, and half of the 4,950 counted freshmen came from just 90 schools.
