Three American colleges still carry "School of Mines" in their name, and all three were founded in direct response to a 19th-century gold rush. None of them are mining-only anymore -- but the all-STEM structure that mining education left behind turns out to produce some of the highest-earning graduates in the country, Ivy League included.
Three schools, one shared origin story
All three US schools of mines were founded by state or territorial legislatures specifically to train mining engineers for a regional boom, within 15 years of each other:
- Colorado School of Mines (Golden, CO), founded 1874 as the Territorial School of Mines, established to address Colorado's mining industry following the 1859 gold rush.
- South Dakota School of Mines and Technology (Rapid City, SD), founded 1885 as the Dakota School of Mines, established to meet demand for trained mining engineers during the Black Hills gold rush.
- New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (Socorro, NM), founded 1889 as the New Mexico School of Mines, established by the territorial legislature to boost the mining-dependent economy.
None of them are mining-only today
That founding mission has genuinely broadened. At Colorado School of Mines, the most popular undergraduate major today is Mechanical Engineering (roughly 355 degrees granted annually), not Mining Engineering -- alongside Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Geophysical Engineering, and Petroleum Engineering among its full degree list. Mining Engineering still exists as a real major at all three schools, but it's one option in a broad STEM and engineering catalog now, not the school's defining identity the way it was at founding. What has survived intact from that mining-school origin is the structure: every one of these schools requires a STEM or engineering major, full stop -- there's no undeclared track, no humanities or social science degree to fall back on the way there is at a general university.
The earnings comparison that actually surprises people
That all-STEM structure shows up directly in outcomes data. Colorado School of Mines graduates post a $97,335 median salary 10 years after enrollment -- essentially tied with Dartmouth's $97,434 and higher than Brown's $93,487, per the same U.S. Department of Education College Scorecard data this site's college pages are built on. The selectivity gap makes this more striking, not less: Colorado School of Mines admits roughly 61% of applicants, while Dartmouth and Brown each admit around 5%. New Mexico Tech ($76,489) and South Dakota Mines ($72,257) post lower but still strong numbers, well above a typical four-year college outcome, at admission rates of roughly 44% and 80% respectively.
This isn't really a story about these three schools outperforming the Ivy League overall -- MIT ($143,372) and Caltech ($128,566), plus Penn, Princeton, Cornell, Columbia, Harvard, and Yale, all post higher medians than Colorado School of Mines. The real story is narrower and just as real: an all-STEM school with a 61% admission rate is matching or beating two Ivy League schools that admit roughly one in twenty applicants, on the specific metric of 10-year earnings.
Why an all-STEM structure produces this result
Field of study is consistently the single biggest driver of post-graduation earnings -- more than which specific school grants the degree. A general university's median outcome blends its highest-earning engineering and computer science graduates with its lowest-earning humanities and undeclared graduates into one number. A school where 100% of degrees are in STEM or engineering fields doesn't have that dilution -- every graduate counted in the median came out of one of the fields that already drives outcomes upward. That's a structural reason these numbers look the way they do, not evidence that a Colorado School of Mines education is categorically better than a Brown or Dartmouth education; it's a different, narrower bet paying off in the specific metric this data measures.
What this means for you
- If your goal is maximizing early-career earnings specifically, an all-STEM school's admission rate isn't a reliable signal of the outcome you'd get. Colorado School of Mines' 61% admission rate produces earnings in the same range as schools admitting one-twelfth as many applicants.
- Don't mistake "School of Mines" in a name for a narrow, mining-only program today. All three have broadened into general engineering and STEM universities; check the actual current major list rather than assuming from the name.
