CLEP spans five broad subject categories, but two subjects a lot of students assume are covered simply aren't offered as their own exam. Here's exactly what CLEP does instead, with the real percentages, not a guess.
No standalone Physics exam -- Natural Sciences covers 16% of it instead
There is no CLEP exam called "Physics." The closest thing is the Natural Sciences exam, which splits evenly between biological science (50%) and physical science (50%) -- and within that physical-science half, physics topics account for about 16% of the total exam: 12% on heat, thermodynamics, classical mechanics, and relativity, plus 4% on electricity, magnetism, waves, light, and sound. The rest of Natural Sciences covers chemistry, atomic and nuclear structure, astronomy, and Earth science alongside evolution, cell biology, and ecology on the biological side. Passing it demonstrates broad science literacy, not physics mastery specifically -- it isn't a substitute for a real physics course exam.
No standalone Statistics exam -- College Mathematics covers 15% of it instead
There is no CLEP exam called "Statistics" either. The closest thing is College Mathematics, a general survey exam where Data Analysis and Statistics makes up 15% of the content -- covering data interpretation and representation (tables, bar graphs, scatterplots, histograms), numerical summaries like mean, median, mode, and range, plus standard deviation and normal distribution. The other 85% of College Mathematics covers algebra and functions (20%), financial mathematics (20%), logic and sets (15%), counting and probability (10%), geometry (10%), and numbers (10%) -- none of it statistics-specific.
Why CLEP leaves these two out
This isn't an oversight -- AP already offers full standalone exams in both subjects (AP Physics 1, 2, and C; AP Statistics), so CLEP's Natural Sciences and College Mathematics exams are built as general-survey alternatives instead of duplicating AP's more specialized coverage. What this means for you
- Don't register for Natural Sciences or College Mathematics expecting a physics or statistics exam. Both are broad surveys where your target subject is one slice among several others, not the focus.
- If physics or statistics specifically is the credit you need, check AP first. AP offers full standalone exams in both, which CLEP doesn't.
- If you take Natural Sciences or College Mathematics anyway, make sure you're prepared for the other 84-85% of the exam too, not just the slice that matches the subject you actually wanted.
- Confirm with your target school what a passing score on either exam actually earns. A broad-survey exam like Natural Sciences may satisfy a general science requirement without being labeled as physics credit specifically -- worth verifying directly rather than assuming.
