The part that surprises people: the out-of-state premium shrinks as you climb the chart
At the bottom tier, a non-resident's award is 8 times the resident award at the identical GPA band ($8,000 vs. $1,000). Climb to the top tier, and that ratio has fallen to 3.2 times ($16,000 vs. $5,000). Every tier in between sits somewhere along that shrinking curve: 5x at Rock Chalk/Performance, 4x at Crimson & Blue/Achievement, 3.5x at Traditions/Distinction. A weaker-GPA non-resident gets a proportionally much bigger boost over their resident counterpart than a top-GPA non-resident does -- the two charts aren't scaled versions of each other, even though they use identical GPA bands.
What this means for you
- Don't assume the non-resident chart is just "resident times a fixed number." The multiplier is real but it changes at every tier -- check your specific GPA band on both tables rather than estimating from one data point.
- Both charts use GPA alone. There's no way to compensate for a lower GPA with a strong test score here, unlike schools such as Alabama or Oklahoma.
- KU accepts weighted or unweighted GPA, whichever is higher -- worth checking both calculations if you're near a tier boundary.
- Hit the December 1 deadline with a complete application, including transcripts, for scholarship consideration.
