The American math competition pathway isn't one contest -- it's a funnel with three distinct stages, run by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), and each stage has its own separate qualification rule. Stage one: AMC 8, 10, and 12
The AMC (American Mathematics Competitions) comes in three grade-gated versions: AMC 8 (grade 8 and below), AMC 10 (grade 10 and below), and AMC 12 (grade 12 and below, under 19.5 years old on competition day). More than 300,000 students take the AMC 10/12 each year, making it by far the widest part of the funnel -- most students who take it never advance further, and that's the normal outcome, not a sign of failure.
Stage two: qualifying for AIME
The AIME (American Invitational Mathematics Examination) is the first real cut. Each stage tests something different, which is the practical reason cramming for the wrong stage backfires. AIME rewards being able to actually work through harder problems to a clean numerical answer, without partial credit to fall back on. USAMO/USAJMO is a proof-based competition -- an entirely different skill from either AMC or AIME, since it's scored on the rigor and clarity of a written mathematical argument, not a final number. A student who's strong at fast AMC-style problem-solving isn't automatically ready for USAMO's proof-writing demands, and treating the three stages as "the same test, just harder" is a common and costly prep mistake.
