Regeneron ISEF (the International Science and Engineering Fair) isn't something you apply to directly -- you can't register for it the way you'd sign up for the SAT. The only way in is to place at one of its hundreds of affiliated local, regional, or state science fairs first, which makes "how do I qualify for ISEF" a more useful question for most students than "how do I win ISEF."
What ISEF actually is
Run by the nonprofit Society for Science, ISEF is the largest pre-college science research competition in the world, drawing affiliated fairs across all 50 states, D.C., and more than 75 countries, regions, and territories. Students compete in one of 22 STEM categories, ranging from Animal Sciences and Behavioral & Social Sciences to Systems Software and Translational Medical Science, either individually or in teams of up to three.
Eligibility is specific: any student in grades 9-12 (or the equivalent), under 20 years old as of May 1 preceding the competition, can qualify -- but only through an affiliated fair. Research must reflect no more than 12 months of continuous work, and can't include work performed more than 18 months before the competition, which is meant to keep projects current rather than years-old work being recycled.
The pipeline: local fair, not a direct application
The actual qualification path runs through your school or regional science fair, which must be one of ISEF's affiliated fairs (Society for Science maintains a searchable directory of them). Placing well enough at that affiliated fair -- exact advancement numbers are set locally, based on the fair's own size and participation -- earns the invitation to compete at ISEF itself. This means the real first decision for a student interested in ISEF isn't about ISEF at all: it's finding out whether your school's science fair (or your regional one) is actually ISEF-affiliated, since a fair that isn't can't send anyone there no matter how strong the project is.
What's actually on the line once you're there
ISEF's award structure is real money, not symbolic: each of the 22 categories awards $6,000 for first place, down to $600 for fourth, and the very top of the whole fair receives grand prizes of $100,000 for the top winner and $75,000 each for the next two. Beyond the category and grand awards, roughly 50 corporate and educational sponsors contribute about $4 million more in special awards, adding up to more than 600 individual and team awards given out annually. Projects are evaluated by about 1,000 volunteer judges, each holding a PhD or equivalent professional credential in their field -- a genuinely rigorous review, not a formality.
How this compares to other academic research paths
ISEF is the individually- (or small-team-) scored counterpart to a program like Science Olympiad, which scores as a full team across many different events rather than one deep project. What this means for you
- Find out if your school's fair is ISEF-affiliated before you build a project around reaching ISEF. A non-affiliated fair, no matter how competitive, doesn't feed into the ISEF pipeline.
- Start research well before the 12-month window closes out. Projects can't reflect more than 12 months of continuous work or be more than 18 months old at competition time, so timing your project's start matters.
- The prize money is real, but it's not the point of the exercise. The bigger value is a project evaluated by roughly 1,000 real PhD-level judges -- a credibility signal a paid research program's in-house journal can't match.
- Individual or small-team, up to three students -- decide early whether your project genuinely needs collaborators or works better as solo research.
