The PA State Grant deadline depends on where you're going. If you'll enroll at a four-year college (or a 2-year private college's degree program), or you're renewing, file the FAFSA by May 1 before the academic year. If you'll attend a community college, a Pennsylvania open-admission school, or a business, trade or technical school, the deadline is Aug. 1. The grant pays up to $6,000 for 2026-27. And for first-time applicants, the FAFSA isn't the last step: PHEAA's own forms come next.
The rules below are from the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency's (PHEAA) PA State Grant pages.
Deadlines by applicant type
| Applicant | Deadline | Applies to |
|---|---|---|
| First-time, four-year or 2-year private college | May 1 before the academic year | Degree or college-transferable programs at 2-year private colleges and all other colleges and universities, except community colleges and designated open-admission schools |
| First-time, community college or trade school | Aug. 1 before the academic year | Community colleges, designated Pennsylvania open-admission institutions, business, trade or technical schools, hospital schools of nursing, non-transferable 2-year programs |
| Renewal | May 1 | All renewal students |
| Summer term | Sept. 1 | Separate PA Summer Grant application |

Missed the deadline? Apply anyway. PHEAA says late applications (except for summer) "may qualify for awards if funding permits."
How to apply, step by step
- File the FAFSA by your deadline.
- Watch for PHEAA's email (sent to the address on your FAFSA) with a link to activate your GrantUs account. If you don't pass the initial screening, you won't get one.
- Activate GrantUs, set a password and turn on multifactor authentication.
- First-time applicants: complete the PA State Grant Form and High School Form in your Action Items. Renewal students usually don't need to, but check Action Items for requests.
How much it pays
| 2026-27 | |
|---|---|
| Maximum award | $6,000 |
| At a school in a "portable" or reciprocal state | $600 ($800 for veterans) |
| Based on | Your financial situation and the type of Pennsylvania school you attend |

Who's eligible
You must:
- Be a Pennsylvania resident and a high school graduate.
- Enroll at least half time (6 credits a semester) in an approved program of at least two academic years, unconditionally admitted.
- Show financial need on the FAFSA and make satisfactory academic progress.
- Not have a bachelor's degree or have used the maximum number of State Grants.
- Not be in default on an education loan.
At schools not headquartered in Pennsylvania, at least half your program and your term-by-term enrollment must be classroom instruction.
What this means for you
- Mark May 1, 2027 if you're headed to a four-year college; Aug. 1 for community college.
- Check your email after filing the FAFSA, and finish the GrantUs forms promptly.
- Use a Pennsylvania school for the full grant; out of state, it's $600 at most in reciprocal states.
- Pair it with a tuition pledge: at the 10 PASSHE universities, students with both a Pell Grant and a PA State Grant will pay no tuition starting fall 2027; see Pennsylvania free tuition programs.
