The Maryland 2+2 Transfer Scholarship pays community college graduates $1,000 a year -- or $2,000 in science, teaching, engineering, computer science, math, or nursing -- when they transfer to a Maryland four-year college. For the 2026-27 award year, the application and the FAFSA are both due October 15, 2026. Unlike Maryland's main need-based grants, which run off the March 1 FAFSA deadline with no separate form, 2+2 has its own application inside the MHEC One-App, and its calendar runs on a completely different schedule.
2+2 Transfer Scholarship deadlines for 2026-27
| Step | Deadline |
|---|---|
| Application opens (in the MHEC One-App on MDCAPS) | January 15, 2026 |
| 2+2 application submitted | October 15, 2026 |
| 2026-27 FAFSA filed | October 15, 2026 |
| Community college transcript with current cumulative GPA | November 15, 2026 |
| After a conditional award: final transcript showing the associate degree conferred | February 15, 2027 |
| After a conditional award: proof of Selective Service registration, if applicable | February 15, 2027 |
MHEC reviews and awards applications on a rolling basis as each file becomes complete, so earlier is better even before the deadline. A diploma doesn't count as proof of the degree -- MHEC accepts only a final community college transcript showing the conferral date.
Who qualifies
For 2026-27, MHEC's rules say first-time applicants must:
- be a Maryland resident and file the FAFSA -- students who can't file the FAFSA aren't eligible, unlike the GA and EA Grants;
- be finishing an associate degree at a Maryland community college by December 2026, or have completed one during 2025-26;
- have a 2.5 cumulative GPA or higher at the community college;
- have a Student Aid Index (SAI) of $10,000 or less and show financial need;
- transfer full-time to a Maryland public or private nonprofit four-year institution during 2026-27;
- not have received a bachelor's or associate degree before July 2025.
The timing rules are strict. A student who finished an associate degree in 2025-26 must transfer for fall 2026; one finishing in fall 2026 must transfer for spring 2027 -- and, per MHEC's FAQ, receives the scholarship for spring 2027 only, not the full year. Transferring without finishing the associate degree makes you ineligible. MHEC also notes that a fall 2025 graduate who enrolled at a four-year school before fall 2026 isn't eligible. And anyone whose associate degree came before July 2025 can't apply for 2026-27 or any future year of the program.
How much it pays, and for how long
| Program you enroll in | Annual award | Per term |
|---|---|---|
| Science, teaching, engineering, computer science, mathematics, or nursing | $2,000 | $1,000 |
| All other programs | $1,000 | $500 |
The award goes toward tuition and mandatory fees at your four-year school and depends on available funds. It renews for up to three years or six terms, whichever is longer, without a new application, as long as you stay a Maryland in-state student, refile the FAFSA every year, stay full-time at a Maryland public or private nonprofit four-year school, and keep a 2.5 cumulative GPA there.
How it fits with other Maryland aid
2+2 is a modest award on its own. Its real value is as one layer on top of Maryland's need-based grants: a transfer student who also files by March 1 can be considered for the Educational Assistance Grant or, under the 2026-27 change that opened it to current college students, the Guaranteed Access Grant. If you started on the Community College Promise Scholarship, the 2.5 GPA you needed to keep it is the same bar 2+2 sets for transfer.
What this means for you
- If you're transferring in 2026-27, act now. The application and FAFSA close October 15, 2026, and the transcript is due November 15.
- Check your SAI on your FAFSA Submission Summary. Above $10,000, you're out regardless of GPA.
- Compare across the border: Virginia's Two-Year College Transfer Grant requires a 3.0 GPA but allows a Student Aid Index up to 15,000.
- Pick your major with the award tiers in mind. STEM, teaching, and nursing programs pay double.
- Planning a transfer for 2027-28? Expect the next application to open in the new year -- the 2026-27 one opened January 15, 2026 -- and keep your community college GPA at 2.5 or higher until then.
