If you're picking AP courses for next year, "everything's changing" isn't quite right — but enough is changing that it's worth knowing before you register.

Two new AP courses are launching

College Board's AP Career Kickstart program — which piloted at hundreds of high schools in 2025-2026 — is going into full release for the 2026-2027 school year with two new courses:

  • AP Business Principles with Personal Finance
  • AP Cybersecurity

A third course, AP Networking, is scheduled to follow in 2027-2028. These are explicitly framed as career-readiness courses rather than the traditional liberal-arts subject list — a shift from what "AP" has historically meant.

The biggest rewrite: AP Statistics

AP Statistics is getting one of the most comprehensive overhauls of any current AP course, effective with the May 2027 exam. Per College Board's own revision notes: the course framework is consolidating from 8 units down to 5, the second-year algebra prerequisite is being dropped entirely (College Board now describes the course as appropriate for any student who's completed first-year algebra), and several specific topics are being cut, including analyzing departures from linearity, combining random variables, the geometric distribution, and the chi-square goodness-of-fit test. The exam itself is also going fully digital through Bluebook, including the free-response section. If you're deciding between Stats and another quant AP this year, expect the redesigned version to look and feel meaningfully different from older prep material — older practice exams and study guides won't map cleanly onto the new format.

AP World Languages go fully digital

French, German, Italian, Spanish, Chinese, and Japanese AP courses are getting substantial updates starting in 2026-2027: redesigned exams that put more weight on authentic communication and cultural understanding, and a full move to digital testing through Bluebook (College Board's exam platform).

AP History and other course updates

AP History courses are also getting new exam formats and revised content for 2026-2027, with some subjects introducing project-based assessments completed before exam day rather than everything riding on a single sitting. Separately, updated course frameworks have rolled out for AP Biology and AP Computer Science A.

A smaller but real change: fewer multiple-choice options

AP English Language and AP English Literature multiple-choice questions now have four answer choices instead of five — a small mechanical change, but one that shifts the math on guessing strategy slightly in your favor.

What this means if you're choosing AP courses now

If you're weighing AP Statistics, any AP World Language, or AP History for the 2026-2027 year, go in expecting a different exam than what your older siblings or last year's prep books describe — check your teacher's syllabus and College Board's AP Central page for the specific course before assuming last year's format still applies.
