The University of Mississippi was chartered in 1848 and opened later that year as the state's first public institution of higher education. Its School of Law, established in 1854, was the fourth state-supported law school in the United States, and its School of Engineering, founded in 1900, was Mississippi's first. The university attained R1 (highest research activity) status from the Carnegie Foundation in 2018.
