The University of Vermont was chartered in 1791, making it the fifth college established in New England after Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth, and Brown. Founded with the involvement of Ira Allen, UVM became Vermont's land-grant institution following the 1862 Morrill Act, which added a State Agricultural College. Carnegie classifies UVM as an R1 research university, and its academic units include the Larner College of Medicine.
