The University of Connecticut traces its origin to 1881, when it opened as Storrs Agricultural School on land donated by brothers Charles and Augustus Storrs; it became Connecticut's land-grant college in 1893 and was renamed the University of Connecticut in 1939. UConn has held a Research I Carnegie Foundation classification since 1985 and comprises 14 schools and colleges, including its schools of law, medicine, and dental medicine.
