Haverford College was founded in 1833 by the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). Though not formally religiously affiliated today, the college states that Quaker values of "individual dignity, intellectual vitality, and social justice" remain essential to its character. Its student-written and student-governed Honor Code, which began in 1897 as a system for holding exams without proctors, is described by the college as "the purest expression of the College's values."
