Davidson College was conceived in 1837 as, in its own words, an honor-bound community. Its Honor Code -- a pledge against cheating, lying, and stealing, along with a duty to report violations -- was formalized in 1924 after students gained increasing self-governance through a Student Council established in 1909-10. Davidson describes respect for the Honor Code as the foundation of the open environment in which its students live and study.
